9 ideas to give your rental bathroom some style, no renovation needed

9 ideas to give your rental bathroom some style, no renovation needed

Beige tiles from another era, harsh lighting, a tired shower curtain: rental bathrooms were rarely decorated with love. And since you're not allowed to rip everything out (and you'd quite like your deposit back), you have to get clever. Good news: you can change the whole vibe of a bathroom without drilling a single hole. Here are nine ideas, all 100% reversible.

1. Go for one bold pop of color

In a neutral room, a single colorful element is enough to change everything. The shower is perfect for this: it's often the focal point of the room. A shower head, hose and rail all matching in a bold color, and your bathroom gets a real personality.

  • Feeling soft: pink, lilac, beige.
  • Feeling bright: butter.
  • Feeling bold: cherry, tangerine, cobalt.
  • Feeling chic: matte black, forest.

2. Swap the shower curtain

It's the most visible thing in the room, and one of the easiest to replace. Pick a thick fabric over thin plastic: it looks better, it's machine-washable, and it instantly feels more hotel than campsite. A tension rod, held in place by pressure between two walls, means no drilling.

3. Play with your towels

Towels, bath mat, washcloths: together they make a big block of color. Choose a palette of two or three shades that go with your shower, and stick to it. The coordinated look instantly feels put-together, even in a small room.

4. Add plants

Some plants love bathroom humidity: ferns, pothos, calathea or air plants, for example. As long as you have a window, even a small one. No natural light? Go for dried flowers or a nice faux plant that asks nothing of anyone.

5. Rethink the lighting

Harsh white ceiling light is the enemy of atmosphere. You can often swap the bulb for a warmer light: look for “warm white” on the packaging. For evenings, a small rechargeable cordless lamp or a few candles completely change the mood of a bath. Keep the original bulb so you can put it back when you leave.

6. Get organized without drilling

Clutter is the fastest way to make a room look neglected. A few no-drill fixes:

  • adhesive shelves and baskets in the shower;
  • a freestanding over-the-toilet shelf;
  • adhesive hooks for towels and robes;
  • a rolling cart that slides into a corner.

Important reminder: adhesives hold on tiles, ceramic, glass or smooth stone, but not on paint or wallpaper.

7. Decant your products

Rainbow-colored shampoo and shower gel bottles create visual chaos. Decant them into matching glass or ceramic dispensers, and you go from supermarket aisle to hotel bathroom. Add a little label, and nobody mixes up the shampoo and the shower gel again.

8. Dress the walls, reversibly

  • A large mirror leaning on the floor or on a piece of furniture makes the room look bigger.
  • Frames propped on a shelf instead of hung.
  • Repositionable tile stickers, tested first in a discreet corner.

For stickers, make sure they're designed for humid rooms and come off without leaving glue behind.

9. Sweat the small stuff

  • A nice soap dish or toothbrush holder that matches your main color.
  • A thick, fluffy bath mat.
  • A trash can that doesn't look like a trash can.
  • A diffuser or a scented candle.

On their own, these things seem trivial. Together, they make all the difference.

The golden rule: everything has to be able to leave with you

Before every purchase, ask yourself just one question: “Can I take it down in ten minutes on moving day, without leaving a trace?” If the answer is yes, go for it. Also keep the original fittings (shower head, curtain, bulb) in a box, so you can put everything back when you move out.

Where to start?

If you only pick one idea, start with color. It sets the tone, and everything else (towels, accessories, plants) will naturally fall in line around it.

That's the whole idea behind Showrz: a shower kit that brings color with zero renovation. A stick-on aluminum rail, a 3-spray shower head, a matching hose and a filter, in nine shades, from Butter to Cobalt. It installs in minutes, transforms the whole room, and follows you to your next place.
